How To Take The Most Flattering Photo – Plus The Best Camera Apps

As the official photo agency, Getty Images had a crew of veteran photographers on hand at the Spring 2016 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week to capture every moment of the notoriously fabulous New York event.

MBFW Getty Images photog Astrid Stawiarz shoots models, celebrities and for some of the most prestigious newspapers and photo-journals in the country. We asked Astrid for her top tips in taking the perfect photo (hint: invest in quality foundation and a wide-brimmed hat!)

Rule #1: Location, location, location

It’s not just real estate where this adage rings true. The key to a truly flattering, profile picture-worthy portrait is positioning your pretty face in the most attractive of surroundings. “In an ideal world, I’d love perfect soft lighting, no direct flash from a camera and a Beyonce-esque wind fan  (like the one she has in her concerts!) to follow me around,” says Astrid.  “Unfortunately, there will be times where YOU look perfect but the location doesn’t flatter you.” Want softer lighting? Stay out of the sunlight and find a shady area. Sunlight creates harsh shadows on the face and makes makeup melt. You also want to look behind where you are standing. The last thing you want is a perfect photo with a garbage can behind you.

Rule #2: Pose like you mean it.

“Know your best pose and show off YOU! Whether it’s your perfect jaw line, long legs or your favorite outfit, show it off and be proud!  Practice at home with a point and shoot camera in front of a mirror. Ask close friends on what sides or poses work for you.” Don’t be shy!

Pose like you mean it

Rule #3: Turn to expert guidance (in the latest issue of Us Weekly)

“Putting one foot over the other, turning your hip slightly and placing arms over the waist is classic pose for celebrities like Blake Lively. Also a great relaxed natural look for street style photos! Take note on how Angelina Jolie made a typical pose for the cameras all her own by showing off her legs at this year’s Academy Awards.” Astrid does note no Zoolander ‘blue steel’ posing – and that may include the current celeb fave ‘duck lips’ pout as well.

Rule #4: The camera add 10lbs – how to ditch it fast.

“To make the face appear slimmer, tilt you head up slightly while turning it 3/4 — or angle your camera slightly above your head while tilting your face halfway. Never take a photo from eye’s level it will flatten your face.”

Rule #5: Get ready for your closeup with HD-worthy foundation

“I’m a huge fan of Dior skin foundation, Laura Mercier, Bobbi Brown, YSL Touche Eclat foundation and correction pen as well as the Smashbox HD line. You also don’t want to put much finishing powder over your makeup or make your complexion too dewy.” Stick to liquid formulas – spray on foundation looks too caked-on, says Stawiarz. “I like to start with lightly applying foundation in small even layers and accent the eyes, lips and add a touch of blush. Emma Stone, Jennifer Lawrence, Halle Berry and Frieda Pinto do a great job of showing off their natural features by NOT piling on the makeup. Makeup should enhance your look, not hide it!”

Have you Instagram’ed so much, life looks too dull without a filter?! Fear not, besides Instagram and Camera +, Astrid likes the following apps for iPhone:

Photographer’s Ephemeris App: it uses your phone GPS to tell you the weather around you and how the light will fall that day. It’s perfect if you plan on taking outdoor photos and want to know the right time for lighting.

Snapped App: can make any photo look great – you don’t need to know how to edit a photo; it’s so easy to use the tools.

Photoshop Express: ideal for Photoshop users to make your iPhone snaps look just like you ran the real Photoshop on them.

360panoram: to show where you are or to remember your surroundings.

Mirror App: great for quick self portraits & also a great way to check your face before photos.

Fast Camera: it can take over 800 frames a minute! Perfect for group photos and events – you wont miss a moment.

Model and TV Personality Erin McNaught

Erin McNaughtWith her killer good looks and effervescent sense of fun, Erin McNaught was destined to be in front of the camera. From Miss. Australia pageant queen to MTV VJ, Erin is the type of media personality that can go from FHM cover to Cosmo in one easy swoop. Now based in London, the Aussie bombshell recently earned a coveted spot in the 2013 Red Pages Hot 100 list as a breakout talent and is getting ready to say ‘I do’ to her fiancé, British singer/rapper, Example in May. Despite the impressive list of achievements the brunette beauty has already notched up – the best, it seems, is yet to come.

Q: What are your favorite skincare tips and products for clear, glowing skin? Gently exfoliate every day. Your exfoliant needn’t be expensive, either – save your cash for serums and moisturizers. Be utterly vigilant with cleansing. Makeup wipes alone are not enough! They are merely to get the bulk of your makeup off before you double cleanse. I love Natio Gentle Facial Scrub, La Mer The Soft Moisturizing Creme, Dermamedica Dermal Repair Cream and Loreal Makeup Wipes.

Q: What is your secret to perfectly bronzed skin? Do you spray tan? I do self-tan at home about 9 months of the year. The trick is to be meticulous with both exfoliation and application. I’m quite fastidious so don’t often have tanning disasters, but I’ve had my share in the past!

Q: Do you have any essential tips you’ve learned from hair stylists & makeup artists when working on photo shoots? Day-old hair is much easier to work with, and holds styles better than freshly washed hair. If you have to wash and style, tip your head upside down and use a tiny amount of styling powder at the roots for volume and control.

After applying foundation with a brush, and once you are happy with the coverage, gently press the foundation into the skin using the pads of your fingertips, then apply concealer. By pressing it into the skin, it will last longer and won’t just sit on the surface, waiting to slide off your face. Once you are happy with your base, apply a light powder such as MAC Blot Powder Pressed on your T Zone.

Q: How did you find the pageant experience? What advice would you give other girls thinking of competing? It was terrifying! I was so underprepared. To girls thinking of entering, do loads of research. Watch every YouTube clip about the pageant that you can find, consult a stylist, but most of all, be confident.

Q: Jetting between Australia & London, how would you compare the vibe and the people? What are some of your favorite things about the two places? I find people in London to be quite considered and thoughtful, while Australians have this gregarious, fun-loving attitude. London is definitely more refined, and cool without even trying. Obviously the outdoors lifestyle in Australia is incredible; I would often do interviews like this while sitting on Bondi Beach in a bikini, however I love the fact that there is always something to do in London – the music scene is just phenomenal. I would be out every night if it didn’t kill me!

Q: Any travel beauty tips or onboard essentials? Two words – LIP BALM.

Q: How many times a week do you work out? Is there a type of workout (that you swear by for results? [I work out] 3-4 days per week. The minimum I do is one long run (4-5 miles), a BodyAttack Class at the gym and a pilates class. I need exercise to keep my energy levels up, especially in winter. In Australia I had a trainer who I did really hardcore boxing sessions with – I miss that a lot.

Q: Have you ever done a juice cleanse? No way! I would strangle someone. I can’t live without food!

Q: What is your diet philosophy? Do you strive to stay in top shape year-round or do you have a particular regime in the run up to a shoot or red carpet appearance? I’m generally pretty good year round, but I love pizza more than anything, so I do have to cut this out before a shoot or red carpet appearance. Life is for living and I would be desperately unhappy if I only ate salads while out with my fiancé or friends. As Homer Simpson says, you don’t make friends with salad (even if salad is friends with you!)

Q: How have you found the wedding planning? What are the best perks & the more stressful parts of the process? It’s been relatively easy, actually! I was never one of those girls who fantasized about their wedding but I still kind of knew what I wanted. The hardest part has been getting the addresses of 70 people for the invitations!

Q: You’ve achieved so much already in a short period of time, what’s next for Erin McNaught & what would be your ultimate ambition? Thank you! At the moment, I’m still finding my feet over [in the UK] but ultimately, I would love to write about fashion and lifestyle, as well as continue my television presenting career here.

Skinny Secrets: Model Renee Somerfield

RENEE

Would you say you’ve always been naturally skinny, or is it a product of diet & exercise?

I have definitely always been skinny. My physique is naturally very petite and I am quite tall (5’10). Growing up, this felt very awkward but I have grown to love and embrace my body! I work hard to keep my body looking healthy and fit, which means eating 6+ times a day and working out with resistance and weights to make sure I maintain lean muscle… I don’t like looking too skinny!

Describe what you typically eat and drink over a normal day? What will tend to order if you eat out at a restaurant?

A healthy lifestyle is something I encourage and being a passionate vegan makes it easy to eat clean! I believe in eating as natural as possible, the way mother nature intended. I avoid all animal products like meat, dairy & eggs and stick to green, wholesome foods from the earth. A typical day would include avocado & tomato on rye bread or organic muesli with almond milk and fruit. For lunch I love soy/veggie pattie burgers, Mediterranean salads, wholegrain pastas or a toasted baked vegetable roll.

For dinner I love making Thai dishes with veggies & tofu, Mexican tacos or burritos with beans & LOTS of chilli, baked veggies with hummus or vegetable soup with beans and pasta! I have a recipe book with over 500 vegan recipes, so it never gets boring and always stays fun and nutritious! And believe it or not, I rarely have a problem being vegan and eating out, there are so many yummy, healthy choices – you just have to look!

Renee Somerfield

What are some of your golden rules to being skinny? (for example, no food after 8pm, zero alcohol, no dairy or carbs) What are some of the common mistakes you see other girls making?

I believe that nourishing your body with healthy, natural and nutrient-rich foods will show on the outside. I can thank my positive attitude, lean body, glowing skin and healthy hair and nails for my clean inside! Common mistakes I see are drinking too much alcohol, using recreational drugs, indulging in processed and convenient foods, relying on caffeine for energy and sleep deprivation. Give your body the love and respect it deserves!

How many times a week do you workout, and at what intensity? What kind of workouts do you swear by for a slim, lean body? Is it a huge time commitment?

I like to workout 4-5 times a week for about an hour depending on my schedule. You will never find me at the gym, I’m always keeping it fun and fresh outdoors! I love long distance running, walking my dogs, sand dune sprints and Pilates with weights. If the weather is horrible or I am traveling and can’t fit in a workout, I will use a resistance band! I think the key to fitness is finding something you love and enjoy! If you loathe going to the gym (like me!) then try an outdoor class, swap the treadmill for the sand or go for a bike ride with a friend. Working out is meant to be fun, not a chore!

If you really want to tighten up and get a super flat stomach before a big shoot – what do you do to prepare?

I don’t do any emergency dieting or training before a shoot. I believe in a healthy lifestyle, not a quick-fix diet. Making sure I am eating clean and moving my body insures I am always bikini ready!

Craving Longer, Fuller, Sexier Hair? Everything You Need To Know About Hair Extensions

Craving Longer, Fuller, Sexier Hair

From Kim Kardashian’s glamorous raven locks to the sexy tousled waves on the Victoria’s Secret runway, these girls sure know how to inspire serious hair envy. The secret behind this supermodel hair? Hair guru Orlando Pita rolled up to this year’s VS fashion show with an entire suitcase packed with extensions and wigs. Proof that with the right extensions, those longer, fuller, oh-so sexy locks are yours! We asked hair stylist and extensions expert Sherri Belanger from the Román Salon in West Hollywood to create an essential guide:

Want Something For The Weekend? Consider Clip-Ins

If you are considering adding length to your hair, but aren’t ready for the commitment of hair extensions, clip- in’s may be the perfect solution. Pieces can be purchased at most wig stores, and some beauty supply stores and are perfect for someone who only wants to add volume and length occasionally, like on the weekends, or for an event.

Clip-In With Caution!

You can’t sleep or swim with them, so save yourself the embarrassment and don’t wear them when trying to do either. I’ve seen clip-in pieces on the floor at a club, in the bathroom at a restaurant, in the pool in Las Vegas.. yup. And be sure that your pieces match your hair, ladies. I see it all the time – girls with light brown hair and golden highlights – and bleach blonde extensions! If you have different tones of color in your hair, then your clip-ins must have different tones too otherwise it screams fake. They make so many options these days and offer many sets with low lights and highlights throughout which makes them look much more natural.

Are You Ready For A More Long-Term Relationship

Are You Ready For A More Long-Term Relationship?

If you find yourself becoming addicted to your clip-ins and wearing them almost every day, it’s probably time to start shopping around for a more permanent method. I encourage you to do some homework and shop around to find a method and a stylist that seems best for you. There are many different types of extensions with varying price ranges and qualities.

So How Much Do Hair Extensions Cost?

I get emails daily with this same question over and over. Though I understand this is important, it’s not as simple as that. Price varies depending on many things and you need to learn all about them to better understand where your money is going. If the hair is really cheap, then it probably won’t last very long, and you will have to replace it frequently. The better the quality, the longer it will last. If a stylist is charging you $2500 for extensions, and says you have to replace the hair every few months, then she is ripping you off. Hair that is that price should last you up to a year.

Extensions Are An Investment – and Need To Be Maintained

Once you have hair extensions installed in your hair, you will need a “blending” haircut to finish (and make sure to ask if it’s included in your service charge) You will need them to have your extensions “maintenanced” every few months. This means as your own hair grows, so do the extensions, and after about 2 months it’s time to move the extensions back up to your scalp. This is an additional service so it’s important to consider this when investing in hair extensions.

Important Questions To Ask Your Stylist

Firstly, you need to be sure that your hair can even handle hair extensions. Bad candidates include someone losing their hair, someone whose hair is too short for installation, or someone with severely damaged hair. If your hair is damaged, it’s so important to cut back on the things creating the damage like flatironing. Be sure to check the temperature dial on your hot tool – someone with fine hair shouldn’t have their iron turned up to the max. These tools get hot and can literally burn your hair off, so keep that in mind. Once you burn your hair you can’t “unburn” it. Try to always use a heat protectant product before styling to coat your hair and act as a protective shield. My favorite is Ciment Thermique by Kerastase, but all product lines have their own version of heat protectant products, so shop around if you’d like. The good news is the hair growing back from your roots is virgin hair and has a chance at a new beginning of healthy hair, but if you keep over processing it you’re never going to recover from the damage, and over time it will get worse.

If your hair is damaged from lots of bleaching or changing your hair color often, you may want to chat with your hair stylist about other ways to achieve the color you like without having to create extra damage. If they still are damaging your hair excessively it might be time to find someone new. Natural looking color is so in style right now, and this is huge for us! It means less visits to the salon, which saves damage, time, and money. By taking a more natural approach to your color you are saving yourself all around.

Can Extensions Be Dyed To Match Your Hair

Can Extensions Be Dyed To Match Your Hair?

Coloring hair extensions can be tricky since it’s hair that has been through some processes that we don’t know about. I would never attempt coloring your own extensions at home… ever. Consult your stylist and see if they are able to help you out. It is true that when you have roots throughout your hair, especially when it comes to hair extensions, it blends them and makes them look so natural. Bumble and Bumble makes hair powder in a few different colors which would work great and be a temporary option too.

The Bottom Line

My belief is if you trust your hairstylist, have seen their portfolio of hair extension work, and feel confident in them, then go for it! Everyone has their own personal preference, and whatever works best for you works best for you. I encourage clients to ALWAYS schedule a consultation before getting hair extensions. While extensions are not permanent, they aren’t cheap, and you need to feel good about your new hair awaiting you!

*The hair Sherri uses has been sought after by many stylists but she won’t divulge her secret to anyone. “I’ve spent many years searching for the best quality hair, and now that I have found it, I’m not letting it go! Stylists contact me all the time curious about where I purchase my hair from, but unfortunately I have to keep it to myself!”

Celebrity trainer Gunnar Peterson shares his hot body training & diet tips

gunnar peterson sofia verga

He’s the man behind some of Hollywood’s hottest bodies and the trainer that celebs like Kim Kardashian, Sofia Vergara and Jennifer Lopez turn to for his no nonsense, take-it-to-the-max positive attitude and curve sculpting skills. We asked the Big G for some of his golden rules to getting that strong & sexy L.A body.

How would you describe your diet and workout philosophy as a trainer? Shoot for 100% and you’ll end up at 80-85% and you’ll be great. Shoot for 80-85% and you’ll end up at 65-70% and you’ll be disappointed – regularly.

They say you are what you eat. In the food vs exercise ratio, what percentage does a clean diet contribute to a lean body? The closer you are to your perfect body the more nutrition plays a part. When you are miles away it’s not imperative to be so focused on details. Build a framework then fill in the details as it/you take shape.

What would be a perfect example of a day’s clean eating sample menu? Stick to foods as close to their natural state as possible. Light proteins, light complex carbs and fruit that is high in antioxidants (ex. Blueberries) in the morning; clean carbs, veggies and light protein midday; and veggies and protein in the evening.

sample menuIs it true consuming dairy makes a women’s body look soft? What should you avoid to look less bloated make & muscle tone more prominent? Most people are lactose intolerant, it’s a question of degrees. What animals drink milk after their formative years… No, not cats, unless you put it out for them. Duh.

How many times a week do your celebrity female clients train a week? How is that broken down between cardio and resistance training? Between 2-5 depending on schedules and other athletic pursuits: pilates/ yoga/ Spinning/ running/ martial arts/ tennis. It’s always a mix. Organized chaos.

“Refined sugar is white death! It’s so hard on the body.

It spikes insulin levels and encourages fat storage!”

If you’re serious about dropping some lbs, what are your golden rules for keeping calories in check? Make breakfast bigger than lunch, and lunch bigger than dinner. Avoid complex carbs after dinner.

If you’re prepping a female client for a big red carpet event, how do you step up workouts & how far in advance? Are you an advocate for “two-a-days”? I lobby for more sleep if they can get it so the body can recover. As for the rest, we operate on the ‘if you stay ready you never have to get ready’ principle…

Why is it so important to eat a low sugar diet? If you’re going to have a cheat meal, which is the lesser of two evils: fat or sugar? Refined sugar is white death! It’s so hard on the body. It spikes insulin levels and encourages fat storage! Naturally occurring fats are far less evil. And great for your hair…so I’m told.

Every woman’s natural body type is different. What do you recommend your more curvaceous clients do in comparison to how you would sculpt a more supermodel-esque slender, athletic build? Train the weakness(es) with as much vigor as you train your strengths. Shoot for balance. Never try to hide or mask, own it to your core. Much of the beauty is in how you rock it.

Ok, we have 1 hour in the gym. What is the most effective fat-burning, full body workout we can do by ourselves? A mix of multi-joint strength movements (push-ups, squats, lunges, rows) coupled with high intensity bouts of cardio. Leave it all on the gym floor. DO NOT hold back.
