Q&A with The Real Housewives of Miami’s Joanna Krupa

Joanna Krupa

Q: What are your favorite skincare tips and products for clear, glowing skin? I like Kiehls Panthenol Protein Moisturizer Face Cream but recently I’ve also started using a European cream called SVR Lysalpha Active Cream. Since I don’t tan my face, I love the La Prairie Cellular Self Tan for Face and Body SPF 15. On my body, I use Palmers Cocoa Butter and also Nivea Essentially Enriched Daily Lotion for when my skin feels extra dry.

Q: In the lead up to a big magazine photo shoot, what does a typical day’s diet consist of? I never really had to diet but I just don’t overeat, meaning when I feel like I’m getting full I just stop eating otherwise it’ll lead to me wanting even more. I also try to eat less carbs and sugar before an important photoshoot.

Q: What is your typical workout routine? I typically like to do a whole body workout. I do pilates training once a week with a private trainer in L.A. But mainly I love doing classes –kickboxing, kettlebells; & this cardio ‘pound’ class with drumsticks at the Equinox gym in West Hollywood, which is so much fun and you really feel the burn. I change up my routine so my body doesn’t get used to the same workout. It all depends on my schedule but I try to workout at least twice a week but on weeks where I have more time and energy, I’ll up that to 3-4 times.

Q: Probably the most envied body part of a swimsuit model are those long, slim legs! Do you have any tips for toning the thigh area? Inner thighs is the hardest part to workout and honestly I still haven’t figured out a secret routine for them!

Q: What are your model tips for making your stomach look as flat as possible? Honestly, I wish I found the secret because I never had a perfectly flat belly! [laughs]

Q: Do you use any supplements to maximise your results? Sometimes I’ll use Slimfuel because it doesn’t make me feel jittery.

Q: Do you still taking dance classes after your time on Dancing With the Stars? Did training for the show transform your body? To be honest, I haven’t. I would need a teacher like Derek [Hough] in order to continue and it would take hours a day to learn new dances. The show definitely made my body leaner but didn’t lose any weight on the scale.

Q: What tips do you have for looking your best in a revealing photo shoot? Stay away from carbs a few days before and drink lots of water to flush out any water retention and get rid of that bloated look. I’ll also have a girl come by my house and spray tan me because a bronzed body looks a lot sexier and it makes a huge difference on a shoot.

Q: It takes tremendous discipline – and good genetics! – to be a top model: what advice would you give women who feel that they could never have the physique of a pro model, but want to make the best out of what they have? No one is perfect and we all have to accept what God gave us. My advice is to eat healthily with lots of fruits and veggies, low carbs and workout regularly to look and feel your best.

Skinny Secrets: Beverly Hills bombshell Lilly Ghalichi

LILLY

If Mattel were ever going to design a Persian Barbie doll, they wouldn’t have to look much further than Lilly Ghalichi for inspiration. This Beverly Hills bombshell (who co-founded the luxe swimwear lineHave Faith – Swimgerie, along with another G Girl, Jennifer Stano-David) has turned mirror pics into a fine art with her perfectly tousled hair, towering Louboutins & all-out glam style.

We asked the bronzed beauty to share in her own words all her stay skinny secrets!

“I know what I’m about to say is going to make every girl despise me, but the real reason I’m so skinny is honestly due to my genetics.  I have the smallest bones on Earth, my wrist literally look like that of a 6 year old’s.  As a result, I will naturally always look super, duper tiny.

Everyone in my family is ultra-thin.  Great for my sister and I, maybe not so great for my brother! Lol. We’re all blessed with something amazing- great hair, beautiful eyes, long legs- for me, it’s being skinny! I HATED it when I was younger.  Kids would make fun of me and call me Olive Oil, and I had to wear sweat pants under my jeans (sometimes 2 pairs!) because even the size 0 was WAY too big.  I cried all the time and even saw doctors to try and gain weight.

Now that I’m an adult, I love it

With that said, I do give a little effort to keep my body looking skinny-tight rather than skinny-fat (and, yes “skinny fat” exists, skinny girls get cellulite too!). I’d love to share my skinny secrets with you and your readers.

Diet.  As far as dieting goes.  That entire term is really a foreign concept to me.  I eat whatever I want, and I am a sugar queen- desserts are my weakness.  However, diet is the NUMBER ONE factor for me on how my body will look.  If I eat poorly, it shows.  Although I’m still skinny, I get a little gut, and my butt/thighs look soft also.  When I eat clean, it really shows as well- definition in my abs and all.

When I have to be beach or photo shoot ready, or maybe if I have a new crush I want to impress, I follow a few diet guidelines:

1.     No sugar (unless is natural sugar such as in a piece of fruit)

2.     No Carbs with Dinner, and

3.     No food at all after 8pm.

These 3 simple rules will turn my body from flab to fab in about a week.  No exercise required.  They say that diet is 75% of how your body will look, from experience, I absolutely agree. Although I don’t “diet”, I do have a few very healthy habits naturally, they definitely contribute to why I’m so thin.

For example, I DESPISE alcohol.  You cannot pay me to have a drink.  It tastes disgusting, and the way it makes people act is even more repulsive to me.  I know that alcohol is full of empty calories, so by not drinking, I’m likely sparing myself of tons of unnecessary pounds (and morning regrets!). Also, I don’t drink soda.  Carbonation burns my nose and esophagus.  I have always hated soda, or any carbonated drink, even as a kid.  Sodas are full of sugar and liquid calories, so again, another step I naturally do that I’m sure helps contribute to my skinniness.

Workout. I LOVE to workout.  Cardio is a huge stress reliever for me, and sweating makes me feel alive.  When I was in law-school I had the BEST body.  I used to run about 3 miles-4 times a week because I was so stressed out.  Too bad I was too busy with school to show off my beautiful body!

These days, I don’t have a lot of time to squeeze in exercise.  My partner Jennifer Stano and I run a swimsuit company together (Have Faith – Swimgerie, www.HaveFaith.com), and summer is our busiest season.  When I do find the time to squeeze in a workout, I love to Spin, and I have recently become obsessed with Pilates.

ghalichi glam

For anyone that hasn’t tried spinning, it is the most incredible cardio workout.  You can easily shed 1000 calories in 1 hour if you give the class your all (in fact where I spin (Cycle House in West Hollywood) they offer a class called “The 1000 Calorie Ride”, no one leaves until the calorie counter hits 1000!). When I walk out of a spin class, I’m completely drenched in sweat. The only downfall to spinning is that I actually get too skinny if I go too much! Although skinny is sexy, women need curves too.

Pilates is the second type of workout I do when I have the time.  It’s low impact, and it creates long, lean muscles rather than bulking you up.  Pilates is definitely a great way to be skinny, yet still have a perky butt, and definition in your legs and torso. My class is always filled with models, so clearly it’s working for a lot of girls!

When I’m preparing for something, I will spin 3 times a week, and do pilates 3 times a week (usually on the same day, back to back!).  During busy season at work (like right now..) I will maybe find the time to spin once a week. I need motivation- a trip/shoot, or boy!”

Q&A with model Ashley Mattingly

Ashley Mattingly

The Texan beauty and Playboy cover girl tells us what makes her feel glamorous, her beauty essentials, and how she gets photoshoot ready.

Q: What makes you feel glamorous? I feel the most glamourous when I’m on a shoot and I’m with a stylist getting my hair and makeup done. It makes me feel beautiful even if I’m not feeling great that day because it makes me think, “Wow, I’m so blessed to get to live every girls dream.”

Q: What is your favorite part of your body? MY BOOBS! I did get them enhanced, I was an A-cup and now I’m a small C. To be honest, I wasn’t a fan of getting it done before but they look very natural and people ask me everyday if they’re real or not. Everyone is usually in shock and I’m glad that I did it because now I feel more confident.

Q: What do you think makes a woman sexy? You have to be impecably classy and non-judgemental, just give people chances.

Q: What is your favorite self-tanner? I go to Portofino in Beverly Hills. I get the body scrub first, then I get the personalized spray tan where they airbrush you from head to toe.

Q: Do you go to a facialist or dermatologist for extra treatments? I’ve learned that without getting facials, your skin begins to get rough and hard. Once I started getting facials, which I recommend at least once a month, my skin became less irritated and I noticed I was having less outbreaks.

Q: What is your daily skincare routine like? I use a Cle’ de peau cleanser, it’s a must with oily or dry skin. You have to use a moisturizer even if you have both skin types. I swear by it! I follow it up by using Epicuren facial cream. I love it; it does not make your face feel oily but still makes your skin feel fresh and clean.

Q: Have you had any cosmetic surgery? I’ve had botox for some things on my face that I was concerned about and it did get rid of some lines but don’t be pressured to rush out and do it. Remember girls – beauty comes from the inside and that is the ultimate truth!

Q: Have you picked up any great makeup or hair tips from stylists on shoots? Absolutely! I get most if not all of my tips from my stylists. Shout outs to Marilyn Cole. She works for Alterna and gave me CAVIAR blonde shampoo and conditioner. It actually has real caviar in it and my hair has never felt so soft and smooth before. I always listen to the pros.

Q: What has been the highlight of your career so far? What would be your dream modeling job? It’s hard because I’m torn between being Playboy’s Miss March 2011 and also being the spokesmodel for Femme Noir Swimgerie. It’s such an honor to have graced the pages of Playboy and to have a swimwear line that wants you to be their spokesmodel as well. It’s been an amazing ride for a small town girl so I would say I’m already living my dream.

Q: Do you diet year round to always be photoshoot-ready? I’m not one of those diet freaks where you eat celery all day long, but I don’t go overboard and eat a tub of ice cream when I know I have photoshoot. So it’s a balance, just like life, don’t go overboard without being cautious.

Q: How do you prepare for a big shoot? It’s more about knowing who and what I’m shooting for so that I can get in a state to be confident! [laughs] Before any shoot I HAVE to have my body scrub before my spray tan, eyelashes and I’ll do my own makeup if I have to. Otherwise I always use my girl Sarah Creninm.

Q: What are your tips for getting a flattering photo? I don’t have a signature pose because I have always believed that when I step in front of a camera I have to be myself, otherwise the picture that’s captured won’t be who I truly am…and that at the end of the day is all it’s about!

Jet Set Chic: Have Faith Swimgerie designer Jennifer Stano

JENNIFER STANO

When it comes to designing glamorous poolside attire for the jet-set clique, model Jennifer Stano has definitely done her homework. When she isn’t taking jaunts to her homes in London, Switzerland and the Greek Isles, Stano returns to Beverly Hills, where she founded Have Faith Swimwear with her husband Alki David in 2010. Before making the move into design, Jennifer began her career as a fitness model and it was her keen eye for what enhances a woman’s best assets that inspired her to create the luxe leisurewear line. “I wanted to create a product that makes a woman look and feel like a goddess no matter the time or place.”

Q: Why did you choose to name your swimwear line ‘Have Faith’? How did the line come about? The line started from my background in fitness. I always trained to be competitive and never let myself get down if I didn’t win. The Have Faith line is about making any woman feel good about herself. She has to have faith in her beauty and feel confident.

Q: You have homes in Beverly Hills, London, Switzerland, and the Greek Isles. Do you find a lot of your design inspiration during your travels? I am greatly influenced by the diverse cultures of the world, and especially the glamorous life and style of poolside elegance. I believe every woman should be a chameleon, fitting in wherever she goes, whether stylish in St. Tropez, bohemian chic in Greece, or the life of the party in Las Vegas.

Q: What are some of your favorite pieces from the summer 2011 collection? I love the all over lace bikinis in coral and blue- the brighter the color, the more tanned your skin will look.

Q: Your popular blog features daily ‘mirror pics’ capturing your outfits – how would you describe your style? Do you work with a stylist? I love the store Intermix. I have a sales girl who knows just what I like, every time I walk in. I like to be youthful, yet classy and chic. My style is very young and fresh.

Q: Prior to designing, you were a professional fitness model – what are your top training and nutrition tips? Is fitness still one of your passions? While training, I do a lot of squats, lunges, and a ton of leg lifts and crunches for abs. I eat really clean, which means no sodium and no sugar. No whites! If I could stay in one place long enough, I would compete professionally again.

Have Faith Swimgerie designer Jennifer Stano

Q: What advice do you have for looking hot in a bikini? Oil for sure. I use a spritzer bottle to mist myself when it gets really hot. A simple pair of gold hoops always make a great style statement as well.

Q: What are your beauty must-haves? An eyelash curler, my Mac gel eyeliner and my Smashbox liner brush, and a good bronzer – I like Smashbox and Bobbi Brown.

Q: Your husband is a very successful businessman – what was his best piece of advice for starting your own business? And what’s the best and worst part about being an entrepreneur? His advice is ‘always do what you love doing and you will succeed.’ This was my passion. I’m designing things that I love and would actually wear. In regards to entrepreneurship, it’s a lot more blood, sweat and tears than I thought it would be… but the feeling of accomplishment is unparalleled.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do when you’re not working? I love to go to the beach when it’s warm and enjoy the scenery. Shopping is always an addiction I can’t fight. My weekends are meant for relaxation time and taking a breather from the work week. I enjoy working out and always make time every day to put in a couple hours for a work out.

Q: Will the Have Faith Swimgerie line be expanding? Are you working on any other upcoming projects? Yes! The Have Faith Swimgerie line will definitely be expanding. We have plans for a men’s line and an active wear line. We have just launched our bridal package for the new women’s collection. It includes a veil, a ‘booty veil’ that attaches to any bikini, and a garter belt.
