The Glamour Girl’s Guide….. To Making It In Hollywood

how to make it in hollywood

So you think you have the look? You have what it takes to be scene-stealing starlet? Ready to buy that plane ticket and hightail it to L.A? Not so fast. Like every roadmap to success, you need a game plan. So we asked movie producer Martin Blencowe, the man behind big screen flicks starring A-list talent from Bruce Willis to The Rock, for his insider expertise. In our Glamour Girl’s guide, we share tips on how to be smart and savvy, stand out in a crowd, and discover why it’s called showbusiness.

What advice would you give girls looking to move out to L.A to make it big in modelling or acting?

Having a good attitude is so important. I don’t care how beautiful you are, if your attitude stinks I won’t want to work with you – or recommend you in future for other opportunities. This business is very interconnected and people talk. What goes around, comes around. My other tip? Have a backup plan. If you’re moving out to Hollywood and giving it all you got because this is your dream, good for you. However, be smart about it. Set yourself goals, and be smart about making money and establishing a career for yourself in the event that being an actress just wasn’t meant to be. Plan ahead to get ahead.

Is being an actress in L.A as glamorous as it sounds?

I think the fantasy is always greater than the actual reality. It’s not all great paying jobs, photo shoots and red carpets. In this business, you’re going to face a lot of criticism and rejection, tough competition, and you need a strong work ethic and a great deal of determination to get ahead. If you become a working actress, then there are definitely ‘perks’ to the job, but it’s a lot of behind-the-scenes work to get to that position.

martin blencowe moviesAny practical prep work we should be doing?

Whether it’s acting classes or a dialect coach to work on your American accent, it doesn’t hurt to get some professional guidance if you can afford it. And take care of your body and your appearance. You always want to be ready for whatever opportunity comes up. You only get one chance to make an impression in front of a producer or casting director so you want to make sure you’re prepared and on point for any potential role.

Your new TV show, RESCUE 3, is from the creators of the iconic Baywatch. What has the casting process been like? Can we expect the same kind of bombshell female stars?

It’s a really exciting project and it will feature similar elements of action, beautiful beaches and yes, beautiful women. We have a few female leads cast so far, but we are still on the hunt for someone with that ‘wow’ factor. To this day, Pamela Anderson is still synonymous with that red bathing suit so I’d like to see lightening strike twice with Rescue 3 and create a new star. We will be holding a final casting soon and I will keep Glamour Edition posted closer to the date. G

G Girls | Anna De Nicola

Swiss-born model and actress Anna De Nicola was destined to be in the spotlight. It was practically written in her DNA. The daughter of a jet-setting top model, Anna made her grand debut as the spokesmodel for glam European swimwear label, TA-BOU. She has since starred in commercials, danced in a David Guetta video, graced the runway for luxe French corsetière, Titelle Couture, and has made a successful transition into the realm of acting. Now based in L.A, Anna can be seen in the feature films, “A Fate Tale”, “Noobz” and “Rouse” with many more in the works.

Anna De Nicola

Is being a professional model as glamorous as it sounds? What are the best ‘perks’ and not-so-fun parts about the business?

It can truly be one of the best experiences you’ll ever have. Not only do you get to fly to the best holiday destinations across the world, but you also get to know different cultures. Modeling itself never looks as easy as the resulting pictures itself; sometimes you’re shooting in such a hot climate that your feet are blistering, your make-up melts, you’re sweating all over from the heat, but our job is to make it look effortless.

You have been the face of the international swimwear company, TA-BOU – what was it like seeing yourself on posters and billboards?

I remember seeing myself the first time. I was walking on the street and as soon as I saw it I froze, it made me laugh so much because I worked so hard to get there and then finally I could enjoy it. It is always a great honor to be the face of a brand. As to seeing myself plastered around the city, it can make you feel a little awkward the first couple of times, you barely believe it’s you, but you have to get used to it.

Your Mom was a top model. What advice did she give you about the business?

My mom taught me to be professional, show respect, know what I want, sleep well, be on time and enjoy every minute of every job, but most importantly to always be myself.

How did you prepare to make the transition from modelling to acting?

After years of modelling, I knew it was time for a change and since I was 4 years old, I knew I wanted to become a storyteller. When I model, I imagine a story behind every picture we capture. Now I was ready for these stories to be heard, so I packed up all my things and moved to Los Angeles. I’ve frequented a couple of different schools to be able to get the most out of it, and started auditioning the 3rd week I was in town. There’s just so many things a teacher can teach you, until you have to get up and live the lessons yourself. Most of the things I’ve learned have come from the mistakes I made on set.

You speak several languages, including Italian, Spanish, French and German. Is there a particular language you enjoy performing in more?

I enjoy speaking different languages; I believe every single one has it’s perks. The first language I was ever taught was Italian, so of course it’s the closest to home but whenever I get the opportunity to perform in another language, I enjoy it just as much.

You worked on the silent film, Rouse. How did you find the challenge of a non-speaking role?

Surprisingly enough, I thought it was easier than many scripted roles I’ve had. More often than none, you’ll get a character whose way of speaking is far from your own, which makes it very difficult to connect to, especially in period pieces, where the language still wasn’t as defined as it is today. Of course shooting a silent film also brought difficulties with it, all you have is your range of emotions and you have to express a message with every look, every movement so clearly that the audience understands what you’re trying to say.

On your first audition, you booked the role of “Laura” in the romantic-dramatic feature film, “A Fate Tale,” which screened to sold-out audiences. What was it like being received to such acclaim starting out?

It was great! I had no idea what to expect, so from the first call sheet to the premiere invitation it has been such an incredible adventure! When I turned up for the screening, several months after the film was shot, I was overwhelmed in seeing this big theater completely packed. It sure makes your heart beat fast.

What’s up next for Anna De Nicola?

Enjoy everyday I’m given, keep bringing happiness to my family and loved ones, and strive everyday to achieve greater things.

Want Fuller Lips Or A Narrower Nose? Learn How To Downplay Your Least Favorite Assets – & Maximize The Rest!

jackie gomez

Want bigger, brighter eyes? A narrower nose? Higher cheekbones, or sexier, fuller lips? No needles necessary – the right makeup products and techniques can work wonders on your god-given beauty (even if you did inherit your grandmother’s nose) Let celebrity makeup artist Jackie Gomez, whose impressive clientele list includes Beyonce & sister Solange Knowles; Victoria’s Secret supermodelMarisa Miller and Zoe Saldana, show you how to put your best face forward.

HIGHER CHEEKBONES

“To achieve the effect of higher cheeks bones, apply a bright shimmery white highlighter to the highest points of the cheeks. Contouring the hollows of the cheek bones both help achieve the effects of a slimmer face and higher cheekbones. The nice glow on the cheeks help give a radiant healthy look, which is very flattering. I recommend ULTRAFLESH’s Bronze Metalika from their Bronze and Glow Collection.” ($39, Sephora.com)

Victoria’s Secret Voluptuous Waterproof Mascara, $12, VictoriasSecret.com; Urban Decay’s Revolution High Performance Curler, $20, Sephora.com. MAC Eye Shadow in Ricepaper, $15, MacCosmetics.com.

BIGGER, BRIGHTER EYES

“Three easy steps to achieve the effect of bigger, brighter eyes are universal for ANY eye shape,” says Jackie. “First, using my favorite eyelash curler, Urban Decay’s Revolution High Performance Curler, curl your eye lashes. This product provides the perfect bend to the lashes, which creates an instant lift and opens the eyes. Second, using Victoria Secret’s Voluptuous Waterproof Mascara, apply 2-3 coats of the conditioning formula to hold that perfect eyelash curl and maximize volume. Lastly, my secret to brightening the eyes is use an iridescent shimmery shadow in a reflective pale pink or gold to the inner corners of the eyes. The reflective properties will attract and bounce light, making the eyes appear even brighter. All of these steps combined will create sexy and glamorous eyes.”

FAKE A SLIMMER NOSE

“Nose contouring is much simpler than it sounds. Using a shade one to two shades deeper than your skin tone, apply this sparingly to the sides of the nose. The effect of “shading” the broader areas of the nose will help make it appear less prominent. Also, highlighting the bridge of the nose down the center, will work really work well to give it that pretty “lift” which works beautifully to make the nose appear more flattering and narrower. Try using both L’Oreal’s True Match Powders, ($10.95)  and Inglot’s Contouring Brush (InglotCosmetics.com) which is my favorite product combination for this process.”

FULLER LIPS

“First, line the lips with a nude color most natural to your lip shade. I love using Victoria Secret’s Ginger Spice lip liner, ($12, www.victoriassecret.com) to define the shape of the mouth. Playing up the pout by dusting a shimmery-reflective shadow to the cupid’s bow is an easy tip that will instantly give the effect of fuller lips. Follow this up with an application of your favorite sparkly gloss for maximum fleshy, sexy lips!”

Think You’re Not Photogenic? How To Take The Perfect Picture

Photogenic

Ever find yourself going through a friend’s profile on Facebook thinking, ‘God, she is just so photogenic. Why can’t I look like that in photos?!’. Well, you’re not the only one. A study has found that half of women are so critical of their appearance that they ‘hate’ looking at photographs of themselves. And three-quarters are self-conscious enough to try to avoid appearing in pictures altogether. (I have multiple hand-over-face snaps to prove it). The most common complaint? Teeth that aren’t white or straight enough. Never mind enjoying the Kodak moment – apparently we are too busy worrying about our outfit choice; the morning-after picture reveal on our Facebook wall; being caught with our eyes closed and, even worse, the dreaded up-camera double chin shot. Ugh.

So is it all in our heads or are some lucky people just naturally photogenic? “YES!” says photographer Josh Ryan – the go-to guy for Playboy Playmates who want a smokin’ hot picture. “I’ve shot women that have never taken a photo [professionally] in their life and immediately were amazing in front of the camera. That doesn’t mean that you can’t become photogenic. The key is to let your guard down and become 100% vulnerable in front of the camera… and of course having a good photographer that makes you comfortable and you can connect with.”

Photographer Josh Ryan’s top tips for taking an ultra-flattering photo?

1. Don’t try too hard. Never try to be something you’re not – it shows on camera. Use what you’ve got to the best of your ability and don’t feel the need to nail it on the first try.

2. Practice your poses and facial expressions in the mirror. Pick up a magazine and study the pros. It can’t hurt!

3. The most important tip: get a great photographer! (or a great photo app!)

We took a look at some of the signature poses that celebrities like to strike when the cameras start snapping, from daring seductress to skinny in a flash!

Get The Look: Create The Sultry Glow of a Swimsuit Supermodel

Sultry, summer beauty is all about (trying) to look like you just stepped off a shoot for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. While you may not be able to work a two-piece like supermodels Irina Shayk or Brooklyn Decker, recreating their smouldering look is simple. Celebrity makeup artist Jenna Anton, who works with Victoria’s Secret angels like Candice Swanepoel to create their trademark bronzed glow, shares her bikini bombshell beauty tips.

SI BEAUTY

“First, use your favorite tinted moisturizer or foundation and apply a sheer layer over the face,” says Jenna. “If you have a few imperfections such as pimples, discoloration, or acne, use a bit of concealer for extra coverage. Next, using a cream or liquid bronzer, contour your cheekbones, the temples of your forehead, and neck to give the skin some contrast and depth. If you prefer a flushed radiance on cheeks, use a cream blush in a peachy or pink tone.”

Q&A with model Ashley Mattingly

Ashley Mattingly

The Texan beauty and Playboy cover girl tells us what makes her feel glamorous, her beauty essentials, and how she gets photoshoot ready.

Q: What makes you feel glamorous? I feel the most glamourous when I’m on a shoot and I’m with a stylist getting my hair and makeup done. It makes me feel beautiful even if I’m not feeling great that day because it makes me think, “Wow, I’m so blessed to get to live every girls dream.”

Q: What is your favorite part of your body? MY BOOBS! I did get them enhanced, I was an A-cup and now I’m a small C. To be honest, I wasn’t a fan of getting it done before but they look very natural and people ask me everyday if they’re real or not. Everyone is usually in shock and I’m glad that I did it because now I feel more confident.

Q: What do you think makes a woman sexy? You have to be impecably classy and non-judgemental, just give people chances.

Q: What is your favorite self-tanner? I go to Portofino in Beverly Hills. I get the body scrub first, then I get the personalized spray tan where they airbrush you from head to toe.

Q: Do you go to a facialist or dermatologist for extra treatments? I’ve learned that without getting facials, your skin begins to get rough and hard. Once I started getting facials, which I recommend at least once a month, my skin became less irritated and I noticed I was having less outbreaks.

Q: What is your daily skincare routine like? I use a Cle’ de peau cleanser, it’s a must with oily or dry skin. You have to use a moisturizer even if you have both skin types. I swear by it! I follow it up by using Epicuren facial cream. I love it; it does not make your face feel oily but still makes your skin feel fresh and clean.

Q: Have you had any cosmetic surgery? I’ve had botox for some things on my face that I was concerned about and it did get rid of some lines but don’t be pressured to rush out and do it. Remember girls – beauty comes from the inside and that is the ultimate truth!

Q: Have you picked up any great makeup or hair tips from stylists on shoots? Absolutely! I get most if not all of my tips from my stylists. Shout outs to Marilyn Cole. She works for Alterna and gave me CAVIAR blonde shampoo and conditioner. It actually has real caviar in it and my hair has never felt so soft and smooth before. I always listen to the pros.

Q: What has been the highlight of your career so far? What would be your dream modeling job? It’s hard because I’m torn between being Playboy’s Miss March 2011 and also being the spokesmodel for Femme Noir Swimgerie. It’s such an honor to have graced the pages of Playboy and to have a swimwear line that wants you to be their spokesmodel as well. It’s been an amazing ride for a small town girl so I would say I’m already living my dream.

Q: Do you diet year round to always be photoshoot-ready? I’m not one of those diet freaks where you eat celery all day long, but I don’t go overboard and eat a tub of ice cream when I know I have photoshoot. So it’s a balance, just like life, don’t go overboard without being cautious.

Q: How do you prepare for a big shoot? It’s more about knowing who and what I’m shooting for so that I can get in a state to be confident! [laughs] Before any shoot I HAVE to have my body scrub before my spray tan, eyelashes and I’ll do my own makeup if I have to. Otherwise I always use my girl Sarah Creninm.

Q: What are your tips for getting a flattering photo? I don’t have a signature pose because I have always believed that when I step in front of a camera I have to be myself, otherwise the picture that’s captured won’t be who I truly am…and that at the end of the day is all it’s about!

Editor’s Review: Rodial Brazilian Tan Airbrush

Editor’s Review: Rodial Brazilian Tan Airbrush

As a fair-skinned blonde living in L.A, I’m always on the hunt for an amazing self-tanner that lets me wake up with that oh-so satisfying bronzed glow. I haven’t the patience to lay out regularly to get an all natural color – and I definitely have no interest in frying my skin and dealing with head to toe dark sun spots later on. So I rely on magic in a bottle!

I’d heard great things about the Rodial Brazilian Tan Airbrush (Victoria Beckham is a huge fan of the brand) so I was excited to try it out for myself.  I always prep my skin the night before applying a fresh layer of self-tanner (I have the ol’ bath-exfoliate-shave-moisturize routine down to a fine art).

So I’ll admit I didn’t follow Rodial’s directions exactly when it came to application.. and I learnt the hard way lol They recommend using it in your shower cubicle but of course I just plopped a towel on the floor and sprayed away – then realized the fine mist travels everywhere. Second tip – try to hold your breath! Because it’s very similar to an actual spray tan, you’re continually applying the aerosol so just be careful you’re not inadvertently inhaling along the way (cough cough..)

Shake the can and then hold it 30 cm away from your skin and spray slowly, evenly and continuously. You don’t need to rub it in and it goes on like a dream – even coverage, no spotting, and so easy to get every body part. I never apply self-tanner to my face as I am acne-prone & use benzoyl peroxide/retinol nightly, which just strips it off anyway. But you could easily spray on a makeup sponge to apply, taking extra care around your eyebrows and hairline. Allow it to dry before dressing.

I do believe the trick to really gorgeous convincing color is to have some kind of base tan as it tends to give self-tanner a more natural undertone (and means it will fade more evenly). But base tan or not, the Rodial tanner gave a really nice brown (no orange-y hue!) color to my skin. It is one of the pricier products on the market but you do feel the quality when applying the spray and with the end result. You get about 4-5 full body applications in a bottle so it could be a good beauty splurge if you have a beach vacation or a night out coming up you need to look extra glam for

The Real Housewives of Orange County’s Alexis Bellino

You have gorgeous skin – what is your typical daily skincare routine like? I tend to my skincare regimen twice a day. I believe in a 5-step skincare system: cleanse, exfoliate with the Clarisonic handheld, tone and moisturize, and of course, eye cream is a must. I feel that it’s equally important to hydrate and get enough sleep daily in order for your skin to look its healthiest. I know my skin shows when I’m not getting at least six hours of sleep each night.

What are some of your absolute favorite products we’d find in your makeup bag? I am a lip gloss girl! I always have a lip gloss on! My other must haves are a bronzer and a good powder! I’m a fan MAC, Chanel and NARS cosmetics.

“I also think the only true way to have a toned body is working out regularly. My exercise routine consists of a combination of spin, barre classes, yoga, and strength-training with light weights”

What are your secrets to keeping your hair looking so glossy and healthy? Do you wear extensions (if so, any advice you’ve learned from stylists on how to wear them best?) I have great natural hair; however, to get the length I want, I wear Great Lengths extensions. I believe that to protect your natural hair, you should wear the best extensions, as well as take really good care of them. I also believe in finding a hair stylist that understands your hair. I have been going to Angelic from Lucabella Salon in Anaheim, Ca for eight years now. She has taught me the importance of using good hair care products, a good shine product, and  a dose of a daily vitamin.  The Number #1 tip I must share — and it took me SO long to learn — is you cannot wash your hair daily. Your hair needs the natural oils to keep it healthy, especially, when you’re styling it as frequently as I am.

What’s your favorite way to stay in shape? Do you have any diet tips you stick to that work for you? I am a firm believer in doing everything in moderation; plus, a good old-fashioned workout! I do not deprive myself of treats, yet I will not splurge every day! I want to enjoy my life, which is something my husband helped me learn, and if I want a creme brulee, I will have it. However, I will be disciplined enough to eat healthy the next meal to balance it out! I also think the only true way to have a toned body is working out regularly.  Maybe, not every day, but a person should be healthy and active throughout the week!  My exercise routine consists of a combination of spin, barre classes, yoga, and strength-training with light weights throughout the week.

How would you describe your personal everyday style? Do you have any favorite pieces or accessories you can wear over and over? My everyday style honestly depends on what I’m doing! For comfort, I’m a sucker for a maxi dress, which you can find at www.everythingalexis.com.  I’m also a girl who loves her skinny jeans with a blazer! I have two pair of ‘go-to’ jeans – that is, my skinny AND flare leg Paige jeans.  My favorite purchase this year is my green silk Burberry trench coat.  I’ve been photographed in it too many times. I’ve worn it so much!

What are your tips for feeling confident and beautiful on the red carpet? Do you have any styling tips?  I truly believe I feel the most confident when I’m getting the right amount of sleep and eating healthy. It’s easy to get lazy with meals, or to stay up too late on a daily basis, but your body needs good nourishment and good rest to survive! My best red carpet tips are a spray tan two days before, glossy lips and a confident smile!

What’s your favorite way to shop – retail, online or personal stylist? Anytime I’m getting glammed up for the red carpet or other press, I have a personal stylist, to help me with selections. However my favorite way to shop is retail therapy. It’s good for the soul! When I’m in a store, I must try on each garment.  When shopping online, it’s too frustrating when that package arrives in the mail and you’re so excited to wear the new dress that day; but it doesn’t fit properly!

What inspired you to start your own line? What is your favorite part of the design process? I have always loved fashion. For many years I had been spending a lot of time and money at my tailor’s shop, altering and enhancing my garments, whether it was adding this, shortening that, moving this etc. Once I became a part of RHOC, I had a platform, and I decided to make my dream of starting a fashion line a reality.

Do you have plans to expand your line in the future? Yes, Alexis by Tal Sheyn is already in boutiques throughout Los Angeles and Orange County, and we have a Showroom in LA.  We are international as well.  Alexis Couture will be in boutiques by this summer 2012!  You can check out my Alexis by Tal Sheyn at http://alexisbytalsheyn.com/

Which star or model do you think has great style? Who would you love to see wearing your own designs! Oh, I can think of a thousand women in Hollywood with great style … from Angelina Jolie to Gywneth Paltrow to Halle Berry to Jennifer Lopez. But as a designer and tastemaker, I want to dress the everyday woman to look and feel her very best. If I can become a household name in the closets of “real housewives” across the country, that would be alright with me!

You got a lot of buzz after fans saw you have your nose corrected on the show – what advice do you have for women who have been thinking seriously about plastic surgery but are a little nervous or fearful about going under the knife? My advice is if you are a confident, mentally sound individual OF AGE, then you should do what makes you happy. If enhancing or changing something about yourself will boost your confidence a little more, then why not? However, I will tell you this: I was very fearful going into my sinus/rhino surgery, and rightly so. Surgery is a serious decision. Recovery isn’t easy, and complications can arise; so it’s important to consider all the pros and cons, and feel confident about the doctor who’s performing the surgery.

Ashley Tisdale’s trainer spills her bikini body diet & workout routine

Ashley Tisdale

YOU WORK WITH CELEBRITY CLIENTS WHO OFTEN NEED TO GET IN SHAPE, FAST, FOR AN EVENT OR ROLE. WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND DOING TO QUICKLY DROP SOME WEIGHT? If you need to drop weight fast, the first thing you need to do is look at what you are eating. People tend to consume extra calories throughout the day and not even know it. That latte from your favorite coffee house has 180 calories and that little ranch dressing you just added to your salad is another 150. Cutting out liquid calories will accelerate your weight loss. Another emphasis should be placed on eating a green and leafy vegetable during every meal, even breakfast. Some examples include: broccoli, collard greens, kale, and spinach. These veggies are low in calories, low in fat, and high in dietary fiber which make them ideal for weight loss. They are also loaded with vitamins and minerals to maximize the efficiency of your metabolism.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MOST COMMON MISTAKES YOU SEE GIRLS MAKING DURING THEIR WORKOUTS? The most common mistake I see girls make is that they don’t lift weights! It’s the same women on the cardio equipment, day in and day out, whose body does not change. Don’t be afraid to get out there and use a little extra resistance. Women have this notion that weights will make them bulky, but that is totally a myth. You can use weights to tone and tighten, streamlining and sculpting your body the way you want. By adding 2 lbs of muscle, your body can burn up to 100 extra calories a day! That’s 700 calories a week! That’s over 36,000 calories a year!  Keep the weight low and do more repetitions to tone up.

HOW DO I SLIM DOWN WITHOUT GETTING TOO MUCH MUSCLE DEFINITION? Find a good balance between cardio training and weight training. If you go to the gym 4 days per week, spend 2 days weight training and 2 days doing only cardio. The weight training will make your muscles strong while the cardio will prevent any unwanted weight gain.

TAKE US THROUGH A TYPICAL WORKOUT YOU DO WITH ONE OF YOUR FEMALE CELEBRITY CLIENTS? I want to burn as many calories as possible during our sessions and work on those troubling areas for girls (thighs, butt, arms, & abs).  The key is to get as much of the body moving as possible during every exercise. Take an exercise like a squat. You incorporate all of the large muscles in the lower body (quads, hamstrings, and glutes), but adding an overhead shoulder press after you complete each squat will bring the upper body into play. Now you have hit all of those problem areas and burned more calories to sculpt your body quicker. Isolation exercises, or exercises for one muscle group should be done toward the end of your workout.

WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND FOR GETTING A FLATTER, TIGHTER STOMACH? You cannot reduce fat around just one part of your body. Get every muscle moving. The more calories you burn the slimmer in the waist you will get. To strengthen up the entire core, exercises like planks and side planks will effectively work those abs, but also the lower back and those saddle bag areas.

WHAT IS THE BEST FAT-BURNING CARDIO A GIRL CAN DO? Definitely interval training cardio! This will burn more calories in a shorter amount of time. Interval training involves alternating between higher and lower intensities of exercise to raise your heart rate and provide enough rest to push a little further.

WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND DOING FOR LEANER, SLIMMER LEGS? Multi directional lunges are the key: Lunge forward, out on diagonals, sideways, and backward to effectively work the entire upper thigh.  You do not need to hold any weights while doing these exercises.  Gravity will provide all of the resistance you need.
