Pilates, Body Fat Stem Cells & Coconut Oil? Make Your Chest Look Its Best!

As this year’s awards season rolls around, chances are every actress will have her own personal Golden Globes on display. Fortunately, Hollywood’s top dermatologists and facialists are on hand to dish out lasers, treatments and peels to ensure they rock a delectable decolletage in front of the cameras. Here are their top tips to keeping cleavage wrinkles (eek!) at bay and skin toned and firm (Hint: ditch the push-up bra!)

The neck and cleavage area always has been a sure tell of aging. After all, no one is immune to genetics and gravity’s pull. And no amount of makeup or exercise can affect neck cords and deep cleavage lines (though sunblock, of course, can help prevent fine lines and pigmentation damage). But in 2015, there are a multitude of ways to improve the skin from the chin down — called the decolletage — ranging from less invasive topicals and microdermabrasion to chemical peels, lasers and even surgery.

Beverly Hills facialist Ronit Falevitch likes exfoliation for the decolletage: “When you remove dead skin, you get new healthy skin.” To get rid of lines and pigmentation in the area, he advises weekly glycolic peels, microdermabrasion and vitamin C, followed by hydrating honey masks and “light therapy that stimulates collagen.” An alternative is “a mix of hydraquinone and Retin-A, a cocktail I mix up as a topical” (neck-only treatment is $150; face, neck and chest, $500). Olga Lorencin Northrup, owner and top facialist at Kinara Spa on Robertson Boulevard, adds a special secret ingredient to her microdermabrasion machine, an oxygen-sodium bicarbonate serum ($300): “We call this a ‘poreless neck and chest facial.’”

For deeper lines, Falevitch recommends a chemical peel, while Northrup opts to add a 20-minute microcurrent: “It’s a fine electrical current that lifts the muscles underneath, a nonsurgical face-lift” for the decolletage. She says clients “really see a difference” after three treatments ($900).

To combat visible loss of collagen and elastic fiber — i.e., the sags — Beverly Hills dermatologist Peter Kopelson recommends photodynamic therapy, which combines the use of an intense pulsed light (IPL) machine with a substance called Levulan to remove brown spots ($800). “The light energy, when applied in a series, also activates collagen and tightens loose skin,” says Kopelson. Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Lawrence Koplin, another proponent of IPLs, explains that they “injure and make the skin heal itself. For the girl who’s been too long at the beach, the top layer of the neck and chest can be addressed by the IPL.” Plus, there’s no downtime. Procrastinators — or last-minute switchers to low-cut gowns — can undergo the treatment on Golden Globes day (and many do) for a quick tightening effect.

Now, what about those two deep cords in the neck that often start to appear on women around age 45? Kopelson applies Botox every two or three months to relax them ($800 to $1,200, depending on the severity of the cords), a very popular treatment among women and gay men, he notes. But Kopelson adds that there’s a reason why fillers aren’t injected into those valleys caused by cords in the neck and chest area: “You don’t want to cause bumpiness; the neck and chest area have very thin skin.” (Other doctors, such as plastic surgeon Leif Rogers, are not averse to using ultra-fine and thin fillers, such as Belotero, for decolletage wrinkles; $850 per syringe.)

Lasers have varying degrees of intensity, with stronger therapies including the Pearl and the Erbium, Kopelson’s favorites. Beverly Hills dermatologist Harold Lancer is an advocate of laser peels for serious grooves, from fractional Erbium, Venus or Diva lasers (all three are great for peeling and tightening) to an EndyMed 3DEEP laser, which uses little gold pins to create tiny wounds that rev collagen output for healing, ironing out crepey texture and chest lines along the way.

An advanced turkey neck can benefit from the newly FDA-cleared ultrasound technology called Ultherapy ($4,500 for face and neck), which tightens the area around the jawline with more energy than lasers, says Rogers. It treats deeper layers of skin with little visible healing, and can take three months for best results. “It even has a breast-lifting component,” he says.

For deeper neck and chest wrinkles, Koplin believes in using the stem cells of one’s own body fat as an injectable to plump skin ($8,000 to $14,000). “Stem cell nanostem serum improves the skin rather than injuring the skin,” he says. The fat is extracted by liposuction from the thighs or belly and injected with the serum into cleavage lines, for an almost permanent filler effect.

An even more invasive treatment is ThermiTight ($4,500), which delivers radio frequency under the skin with a probe, heating tissue to the point where it increases collagen. “After that, it’s only surgery,” says Rogers, “a little incision under the chin, cut the muscle a little, tie it together, and you have a new neck by platysmaplasty,” or neck lift. It seems that for some pronounced neck bands, only a good old-fashioned lift will do ($6,000 to $8,000).

Yet the laser-, voltage- and needle-averse need not despair. Lifestyle changes, such as cutting out sun exposure, smoking and alcohol, can help (although nothing can prevent lines in the breast area caused simply from sleeping). A low-fi tip from Northrup that anyone can try — and women over 50 should — is massaging in nutritive serums or oils (coconut oil “is fantastic for the chest”).

Lancer also recommends a high-protein, low-carb and no-added-salt diet to improve skin texture, and Pilates to keep the musculature under the skin firm, making it tighter. And please note, ladies, that according to Lancer, push-up bras can cause cleavage lines, and breast implants make them even worse! Lancer adds that, whatever you do, “the skin has to match from the dinner table up” — meaning, if women are having facial treatments, they would be wise to also treat the neck and chest or their skin tones won’t jibe: “It’s a dead giveaway.”

So you think you have the look? You have what it takes to be scene-stealing starlet? Ready to buy that plane ticket and hightail it to L.A? Not so fast. Like every roadmap to success, you need a game plan. So we asked movie producer Martin Blencowe, the man behind big screen flicks starring A-list talent from Bruce Willis to The Rock, for his insider expertise. In our Glamour Girl’s guide, we share tips on how to be smart and savvy, stand out in a crowd, and discover why it’s called showbusiness.

What advice would you give girls looking to move out to L.A to make it big in modelling or acting?

Having a good attitude is so important. I don’t care how beautiful you are, if your attitude stinks I won’t want to work with you – or recommend you in future for other opportunities. This business is very interconnected and people talk. What goes around, comes around. My other tip? Have a backup plan. If you’re moving out to Hollywood and giving it all you got because this is your dream, good for you. However, be smart about it. Set yourself goals, and be smart about making money and establishing a career for yourself in the event that being an actress just wasn’t meant to be. Plan ahead to get ahead.

Is being an actress in L.A as glamorous as it sounds?

I think the fantasy is always greater than the actual reality. It’s not all great paying jobs, photo shoots and red carpets. In this business, you’re going to face a lot of criticism and rejection, tough competition, and you need a strong work ethic and a great deal of determination to get ahead. If you become a working actress, then there are definitely ‘perks’ to the job, but it’s a lot of behind-the-scenes work to get to that position.

Whether it’s acting classes or a dialect coach to work on your American accent, it doesn’t hurt to get some professional guidance if you can afford it. And take care of your body and your appearance. You always want to be ready for whatever opportunity comes up. You only get one chance to make an impression in front of a producer or casting director so you want to make sure you’re prepared and on point for any potential role.

Your new TV show, RESCUE 3, is from the creators of the iconic Baywatch. What has the casting process been like? Can we expect the same kind of bombshell female stars?

It’s a really exciting project and it will feature similar elements of action, beautiful beaches and yes, beautiful women. We have a few female leads cast so far, but we are still on the hunt for someone with that ‘wow’ factor. To this day, Pamela Anderson is still synonymous with that red bathing suit so I’d like to see lightening strike twice with Rescue 3 and create a new star. We will be holding a final casting soon and I will keep Glamour Edition posted closer to the date. G

Is being a professional model as glamorous as it sounds? What are the best ‘perks’ and not-so-fun parts about the business?

It can truly be one of the best experiences you’ll ever have. Not only do you get to fly to the best holiday destinations across the world, but you also get to know different cultures. Modeling itself never looks as easy as the resulting pictures itself; sometimes you’re shooting in such a hot climate that your feet are blistering, your make-up melts, you’re sweating all over from the heat, but our job is to make it look effortless.

You have been the face of the international swimwear company, TA-BOU – what was it like seeing yourself on posters and billboards?

I remember seeing myself the first time. I was walking on the street and as soon as I saw it I froze, it made me laugh so much because I worked so hard to get there and then finally I could enjoy it. It is always a great honor to be the face of a brand. As to seeing myself plastered around the city, it can make you feel a little awkward the first couple of times, you barely believe it’s you, but you have to get used to it.

Your Mom was a top model. What advice did she give you about the business?

My mom taught me to be professional, show respect, know what I want, sleep well, be on time and enjoy every minute of every job, but most importantly to always be myself.

How did you prepare to make the transition from modelling to acting?

After years of modelling, I knew it was time for a change and since I was 4 years old, I knew I wanted to become a storyteller. When I model, I imagine a story behind every picture we capture. Now I was ready for these stories to be heard, so I packed up all my things and moved to Los Angeles. I’ve frequented a couple of different schools to be able to get the most out of it, and started auditioning the 3rd week I was in town. There’s just so many things a teacher can teach you, until you have to get up and live the lessons yourself. Most of the things I’ve learned have come from the mistakes I made on set.

You speak several languages, including Italian, Spanish, French and German. Is there a particular language you enjoy performing in more?

I enjoy speaking different languages; I believe every single one has it’s perks. The first language I was ever taught was Italian, so of course it’s the closest to home but whenever I get the opportunity to perform in another language, I enjoy it just as much.

You worked on the silent film, Rouse. How did you find the challenge of a non-speaking role?

Surprisingly enough, I thought it was easier than many scripted roles I’ve had. More often than none, you’ll get a character whose way of speaking is far from your own, which makes it very difficult to connect to, especially in period pieces, where the language still wasn’t as defined as it is today. Of course shooting a silent film also brought difficulties with it, all you have is your range of emotions and you have to express a message with every look, every movement so clearly that the audience understands what you’re trying to say.

On your first audition, you booked the role of “Laura” in the romantic-dramatic feature film, “A Fate Tale,” which screened to sold-out audiences. What was it like being received to such acclaim starting out?

It was great! I had no idea what to expect, so from the first call sheet to the premiere invitation it has been such an incredible adventure! When I turned up for the screening, several months after the film was shot, I was overwhelmed in seeing this big theater completely packed. It sure makes your heart beat fast.

We asked the Big G for some of his golden rules to getting that strong & sexy L.A body.

How would you describe your diet and workout philosophy as a trainer? Shoot for 100% and you’ll end up at 80-85% and you’ll be great. Shoot for 80-85% and you’ll end up at 65-70% and you’ll be disappointed – regularly.

They say you are what you eat. In the food vs exercise ratio, what percentage does a clean diet contribute to a lean body? The closer you are to your perfect body the more nutrition plays a part. When you are miles away it’s not imperative to be so focused on details. Build a framework then fill in the details as it/you take shape.

What would be a perfect example of a day’s clean eating sample menu? Stick to foods as close to their natural state as possible. Light proteins, light complex carbs and fruit that is high in antioxidants (ex. Blueberries) in the morning; clean carbs, veggies and light protein midday; and veggies and protein in the evening.

What should you avoid to look less bloated make & muscle tone more prominent? Most people are lactose intolerant, it’s a question of degrees. What animals drink milk after their formative years… No, not cats, unless you put it out for them. Duh.

How many times a week do your celebrity female clients train a week? How is that broken down between cardio and resistance training? Between 2-5 depending on schedules and other athletic pursuits: pilates/ yoga/ Spinning/ running/ martial arts/ tennis. It’s always a mix. Organized chaos.

If you’re serious about dropping some lbs, what are your golden rules for keeping calories in check? Make breakfast bigger than lunch, and lunch bigger than dinner. Avoid complex carbs after dinner.

If you’re prepping a female client for a big red carpet event, how do you step up workouts & how far in advance? Are you an advocate for “two-a-days”? I lobby for more sleep if they can get it so the body can recover. As for the rest, we operate on the ‘if you stay ready you never have to get ready’ principle…

Why is it so important to eat a low sugar diet? If you’re going to have a cheat meal, which is the lesser of two evils: fat or sugar? Refined sugar is white death! It’s so hard on the body. It spikes insulin levels and encourages fat storage! Naturally occurring fats are far less evil. And great for your hair…so I’m told.

Every woman’s natural body type is different. What do you recommend your more curvaceous clients do in comparison to how you would sculpt a more supermodel-esque slender, athletic build? Train the weakness(es) with as much vigor as you train your strengths. Shoot for balance. Never try to hide or mask, own it to your core. Much of the beauty is in how you rock it.

Ok, we have 1 hour in the gym. What is the most effective fat-burning, full body workout we can do by ourselves? A mix of multi-joint strength movements (push-ups, squats, lunges, rows) coupled with high intensity bouts of cardio. Leave it all on the gym floor. DO NOT hold back.
