As this year’s awards season rolls around, chances are every actress will have her own personal Golden Globes on display. Fortunately, Hollywood’s top dermatologists and facialists are on hand to dish out lasers, treatments and peels to ensure they rock a delectable decolletage in front of the cameras. Here are their top tips to keeping cleavage wrinkles (eek!) at bay and skin toned and firm (Hint: ditch the push-up bra!)

The neck and cleavage area always has been a sure tell of aging. After all, no one is immune to genetics and gravity’s pull. And no amount of makeup or exercise can affect neck cords and deep cleavage lines (though sunblock, of course, can help prevent fine lines and pigmentation damage). But in 2015, there are a multitude of ways to improve the skin from the chin down — called the decolletage — ranging from less invasive topicals and microdermabrasion to chemical peels, lasers and even surgery.

Beverly Hills facialist Ronit Falevitch likes exfoliation for the decolletage: “When you remove dead skin, you get new healthy skin.” To get rid of lines and pigmentation in the area, he advises weekly glycolic peels, microdermabrasion and vitamin C, followed by hydrating honey masks and “light therapy that stimulates collagen.” An alternative is “a mix of hydraquinone and Retin-A, a cocktail I mix up as a topical” (neck-only treatment is $150; face, neck and chest, $500). Olga Lorencin Northrup, owner and top facialist at Kinara Spa on Robertson Boulevard, adds a special secret ingredient to her microdermabrasion machine, an oxygen-sodium bicarbonate serum ($300): “We call this a ‘poreless neck and chest facial.’”

For deeper lines, Falevitch recommends a chemical peel, while Northrup opts to add a 20-minute microcurrent: “It’s a fine electrical current that lifts the muscles underneath, a nonsurgical face-lift” for the decolletage. She says clients “really see a difference” after three treatments ($900).

“Using the stem cells of one’s own body fat as an injectable to plump skin… The fat is extracted by liposuction from the thighs or belly and injected with the serum into cleavage lines, for an almost permanent filler effect.

To combat visible loss of collagen and elastic fiber — i.e., the sags — Beverly Hills dermatologist Peter Kopelson recommends photodynamic therapy, which combines the use of an intense pulsed light (IPL) machine with a substance called Levulan to remove brown spots ($800). “The light energy, when applied in a series, also activates collagen and tightens loose skin,” says Kopelson. Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Lawrence Koplin, another proponent of IPLs, explains that they “injure and make the skin heal itself. For the girl who’s been too long at the beach, the top layer of the neck and chest can be addressed by the IPL.” Plus, there’s no downtime. Procrastinators — or last-minute switchers to low-cut gowns — can undergo the treatment on Golden Globes day (and many do) for a quick tightening effect.

Now, what about those two deep cords in the neck that often start to appear on women around age 45? Kopelson applies Botox every two or three months to relax them ($800 to $1,200, depending on the severity of the cords), a very popular treatment among women and gay men, he notes. But Kopelson adds that there’s a reason why fillers aren’t injected into those valleys caused by cords in the neck and chest area: “You don’t want to cause bumpiness; the neck and chest area have very thin skin.” (Other doctors, such as plastic surgeon Leif Rogers, are not averse to using ultra-fine and thin fillers, such as Belotero, for decolletage wrinkles; $850 per syringe.)

Lasers have varying degrees of intensity, with stronger therapies including the Pearl and the Erbium, Kopelson’s favorites. Beverly Hills dermatologist Harold Lancer is an advocate of laser peels for serious grooves, from fractional Erbium, Venus or Diva lasers (all three are great for peeling and tightening) to an EndyMed 3DEEP laser, which uses little gold pins to create tiny wounds that rev collagen output for healing, ironing out crepey texture and chest lines along the way.

An advanced turkey neck can benefit from the newly FDA-cleared ultrasound technology called Ultherapy ($4,500 for face and neck), which tightens the area around the jawline with more energy than lasers, says Rogers. It treats deeper layers of skin with little visible healing, and can take three months for best results. “It even has a breast-lifting component,” he says.

For deeper neck and chest wrinkles, Koplin believes in using the stem cells of one’s own body fat as an injectable to plump skin ($8,000 to $14,000). “Stem cell nanostem serum improves the skin rather than injuring the skin,” he says. The fat is extracted by liposuction from the thighs or belly and injected with the serum into cleavage lines, for an almost permanent filler effect.

An even more invasive treatment is ThermiTight ($4,500), which delivers radio frequency under the skin with a probe, heating tissue to the point where it increases collagen. “After that, it’s only surgery,” says Rogers, “a little incision under the chin, cut the muscle a little, tie it together, and you have a new neck by platysmaplasty,” or neck lift. It seems that for some pronounced neck bands, only a good old-fashioned lift will do ($6,000 to $8,000).

Yet the laser-, voltage- and needle-averse need not despair. Lifestyle changes, such as cutting out sun exposure, smoking and alcohol, can help (although nothing can prevent lines in the breast area caused simply from sleeping). A low-fi tip from Northrup that anyone can try — and women over 50 should — is massaging in nutritive serums or oils (coconut oil “is fantastic for the chest”).

Lancer also recommends a high-protein, low-carb and no-added-salt diet to improve skin texture, and Pilates to keep the musculature under the skin firm, making it tighter. And please note, ladies, that according to Lancer, push-up bras can cause cleavage lines, and breast implants make them even worse! Lancer adds that, whatever you do, “the skin has to match from the dinner table up” — meaning, if women are having facial treatments, they would be wise to also treat the neck and chest or their skin tones won’t jibe: “It’s a dead giveaway.”

Skinny Secrets: Beverly Hills bombshell Lilly Ghalichi

LILLY

If Mattel were ever going to design a Persian Barbie doll, they wouldn’t have to look much further than Lilly Ghalichi for inspiration. This Beverly Hills bombshell (who co-founded the luxe swimwear lineHave Faith – Swimgerie, along with another G Girl, Jennifer Stano-David) has turned mirror pics into a fine art with her perfectly tousled hair, towering Louboutins & all-out glam style.

We asked the bronzed beauty to share in her own words all her stay skinny secrets!

“I know what I’m about to say is going to make every girl despise me, but the real reason I’m so skinny is honestly due to my genetics.  I have the smallest bones on Earth, my wrist literally look like that of a 6 year old’s.  As a result, I will naturally always look super, duper tiny.

Everyone in my family is ultra-thin.  Great for my sister and I, maybe not so great for my brother! Lol. We’re all blessed with something amazing- great hair, beautiful eyes, long legs- for me, it’s being skinny! I HATED it when I was younger.  Kids would make fun of me and call me Olive Oil, and I had to wear sweat pants under my jeans (sometimes 2 pairs!) because even the size 0 was WAY too big.  I cried all the time and even saw doctors to try and gain weight.

Now that I’m an adult, I love it

With that said, I do give a little effort to keep my body looking skinny-tight rather than skinny-fat (and, yes “skinny fat” exists, skinny girls get cellulite too!). I’d love to share my skinny secrets with you and your readers.

Jenn Stano Lilly Ghalichi Havefaith Swimgerie

Diet.  As far as dieting goes.  That entire term is really a foreign concept to me.  I eat whatever I want, and I am a sugar queen- desserts are my weakness.  However, diet is the NUMBER ONE factor for me on how my body will look.  If I eat poorly, it shows.  Although I’m still skinny, I get a little gut, and my butt/thighs look soft also.  When I eat clean, it really shows as well- definition in my abs and all.

When I have to be beach or photo shoot ready, or maybe if I have a new crush I want to impress, I follow a few diet guidelines:

1.     No sugar (unless is natural sugar such as in a piece of fruit)

2.     No Carbs with Dinner, and

3.     No food at all after 8pm.

These 3 simple rules will turn my body from flab to fab in about a week.  No exercise required.  They say that diet is 75% of how your body will look, from experience, I absolutely agree. Although I don’t “diet”, I do have a few very healthy habits naturally, they definitely contribute to why I’m so thin.

For example, I DESPISE alcohol.  You cannot pay me to have a drink.  It tastes disgusting, and the way it makes people act is even more repulsive to me.  I know that alcohol is full of empty calories, so by not drinking, I’m likely sparing myself of tons of unnecessary pounds (and morning regrets!). Also, I don’t drink soda.  Carbonation burns my nose and esophagus.  I have always hated soda, or any carbonated drink, even as a kid.  Sodas are full of sugar and liquid calories, so again, another step I naturally do that I’m sure helps contribute to my skinniness.

Workout. I LOVE to workout.  Cardio is a huge stress reliever for me, and sweating makes me feel alive.  When I was in law-school I had the BEST body.  I used to run about 3 miles-4 times a week because I was so stressed out.  Too bad I was too busy with school to show off my beautiful body!

These days, I don’t have a lot of time to squeeze in exercise.  My partner Jennifer Stano and I run a swimsuit company together (Have Faith – Swimgerie, www.HaveFaith.com), and summer is our busiest season.  When I do find the time to squeeze in a workout, I love to Spin, and I have recently become obsessed with Pilates.

ghalichi glam

For anyone that hasn’t tried spinning, it is the most incredible cardio workout.  You can easily shed 1000 calories in 1 hour if you give the class your all (in fact where I spin (Cycle House in West Hollywood) they offer a class called “The 1000 Calorie Ride”, no one leaves until the calorie counter hits 1000!). When I walk out of a spin class, I’m completely drenched in sweat. The only downfall to spinning is that I actually get too skinny if I go too much! Although skinny is sexy, women need curves too.

Pilates is the second type of workout I do when I have the time.  It’s low impact, and it creates long, lean muscles rather than bulking you up.  Pilates is definitely a great way to be skinny, yet still have a perky butt, and definition in your legs and torso. My class is always filled with models, so clearly it’s working for a lot of girls!

When I’m preparing for something, I will spin 3 times a week, and do pilates 3 times a week (usually on the same day, back to back!).  During busy season at work (like right now..) I will maybe find the time to spin once a week. I need motivation- a trip/shoot, or boy!”

Skinny Secrets: Model Renee Somerfield

RENEE

Would you say you’ve always been naturally skinny, or is it a product of diet & exercise?

I have definitely always been skinny. My physique is naturally very petite and I am quite tall (5’10). Growing up, this felt very awkward but I have grown to love and embrace my body! I work hard to keep my body looking healthy and fit, which means eating 6+ times a day and working out with resistance and weights to make sure I maintain lean muscle… I don’t like looking too skinny!

Describe what you typically eat and drink over a normal day? What will tend to order if you eat out at a restaurant?

A healthy lifestyle is something I encourage and being a passionate vegan makes it easy to eat clean! I believe in eating as natural as possible, the way mother nature intended. I avoid all animal products like meat, dairy & eggs and stick to green, wholesome foods from the earth. A typical day would include avocado & tomato on rye bread or organic muesli with almond milk and fruit. For lunch I love soy/veggie pattie burgers, Mediterranean salads, wholegrain pastas or a toasted baked vegetable roll.

For dinner I love making Thai dishes with veggies & tofu, Mexican tacos or burritos with beans & LOTS of chilli, baked veggies with hummus or vegetable soup with beans and pasta! I have a recipe book with over 500 vegan recipes, so it never gets boring and always stays fun and nutritious! And believe it or not, I rarely have a problem being vegan and eating out, there are so many yummy, healthy choices – you just have to look!

Renee Somerfield

What are some of your golden rules to being skinny? (for example, no food after 8pm, zero alcohol, no dairy or carbs) What are some of the common mistakes you see other girls making?

I believe that nourishing your body with healthy, natural and nutrient-rich foods will show on the outside. I can thank my positive attitude, lean body, glowing skin and healthy hair and nails for my clean inside! Common mistakes I see are drinking too much alcohol, using recreational drugs, indulging in processed and convenient foods, relying on caffeine for energy and sleep deprivation. Give your body the love and respect it deserves!

How many times a week do you workout, and at what intensity? What kind of workouts do you swear by for a slim, lean body? Is it a huge time commitment?

I like to workout 4-5 times a week for about an hour depending on my schedule. You will never find me at the gym, I’m always keeping it fun and fresh outdoors! I love long distance running, walking my dogs, sand dune sprints and Pilates with weights. If the weather is horrible or I am traveling and can’t fit in a workout, I will use a resistance band! I think the key to fitness is finding something you love and enjoy! If you loathe going to the gym (like me!) then try an outdoor class, swap the treadmill for the sand or go for a bike ride with a friend. Working out is meant to be fun, not a chore!

If you really want to tighten up and get a super flat stomach before a big shoot – what do you do to prepare?

I don’t do any emergency dieting or training before a shoot. I believe in a healthy lifestyle, not a quick-fix diet. Making sure I am eating clean and moving my body insures I am always bikini ready!

Craving Longer, Fuller, Sexier Hair? Everything You Need To Know About Hair Extensions

Craving Longer, Fuller, Sexier Hair

From Kim Kardashian’s glamorous raven locks to the sexy tousled waves on the Victoria’s Secret runway, these girls sure know how to inspire serious hair envy. The secret behind this supermodel hair? Hair guru Orlando Pita rolled up to this year’s VS fashion show with an entire suitcase packed with extensions and wigs. Proof that with the right extensions, those longer, fuller, oh-so sexy locks are yours! We asked hair stylist and extensions expert Sherri Belanger from the Román Salon in West Hollywood to create an essential guide:

Want Something For The Weekend? Consider Clip-Ins

If you are considering adding length to your hair, but aren’t ready for the commitment of hair extensions, clip- in’s may be the perfect solution. Pieces can be purchased at most wig stores, and some beauty supply stores and are perfect for someone who only wants to add volume and length occasionally, like on the weekends, or for an event.

Clip-In With Caution!

You can’t sleep or swim with them, so save yourself the embarrassment and don’t wear them when trying to do either. I’ve seen clip-in pieces on the floor at a club, in the bathroom at a restaurant, in the pool in Las Vegas.. yup. And be sure that your pieces match your hair, ladies. I see it all the time – girls with light brown hair and golden highlights – and bleach blonde extensions! If you have different tones of color in your hair, then your clip-ins must have different tones too otherwise it screams fake. They make so many options these days and offer many sets with low lights and highlights throughout which makes them look much more natural.

Are You Ready For A More Long-Term Relationship

Are You Ready For A More Long-Term Relationship?

If you find yourself becoming addicted to your clip-ins and wearing them almost every day, it’s probably time to start shopping around for a more permanent method. I encourage you to do some homework and shop around to find a method and a stylist that seems best for you. There are many different types of extensions with varying price ranges and qualities.

So How Much Do Hair Extensions Cost?

I get emails daily with this same question over and over. Though I understand this is important, it’s not as simple as that. Price varies depending on many things and you need to learn all about them to better understand where your money is going. If the hair is really cheap, then it probably won’t last very long, and you will have to replace it frequently. The better the quality, the longer it will last. If a stylist is charging you $2500 for extensions, and says you have to replace the hair every few months, then she is ripping you off. Hair that is that price should last you up to a year.

Extensions Are An Investment – and Need To Be Maintained

Once you have hair extensions installed in your hair, you will need a “blending” haircut to finish (and make sure to ask if it’s included in your service charge) You will need them to have your extensions “maintenanced” every few months. This means as your own hair grows, so do the extensions, and after about 2 months it’s time to move the extensions back up to your scalp. This is an additional service so it’s important to consider this when investing in hair extensions.

Important Questions To Ask Your Stylist

Firstly, you need to be sure that your hair can even handle hair extensions. Bad candidates include someone losing their hair, someone whose hair is too short for installation, or someone with severely damaged hair. If your hair is damaged, it’s so important to cut back on the things creating the damage like flatironing. Be sure to check the temperature dial on your hot tool – someone with fine hair shouldn’t have their iron turned up to the max. These tools get hot and can literally burn your hair off, so keep that in mind. Once you burn your hair you can’t “unburn” it. Try to always use a heat protectant product before styling to coat your hair and act as a protective shield. My favorite is Ciment Thermique by Kerastase, but all product lines have their own version of heat protectant products, so shop around if you’d like. The good news is the hair growing back from your roots is virgin hair and has a chance at a new beginning of healthy hair, but if you keep over processing it you’re never going to recover from the damage, and over time it will get worse.

If your hair is damaged from lots of bleaching or changing your hair color often, you may want to chat with your hair stylist about other ways to achieve the color you like without having to create extra damage. If they still are damaging your hair excessively it might be time to find someone new. Natural looking color is so in style right now, and this is huge for us! It means less visits to the salon, which saves damage, time, and money. By taking a more natural approach to your color you are saving yourself all around.

Can Extensions Be Dyed To Match Your Hair

Can Extensions Be Dyed To Match Your Hair?

Coloring hair extensions can be tricky since it’s hair that has been through some processes that we don’t know about. I would never attempt coloring your own extensions at home… ever. Consult your stylist and see if they are able to help you out. It is true that when you have roots throughout your hair, especially when it comes to hair extensions, it blends them and makes them look so natural. Bumble and Bumble makes hair powder in a few different colors which would work great and be a temporary option too.

The Bottom Line

My belief is if you trust your hairstylist, have seen their portfolio of hair extension work, and feel confident in them, then go for it! Everyone has their own personal preference, and whatever works best for you works best for you. I encourage clients to ALWAYS schedule a consultation before getting hair extensions. While extensions are not permanent, they aren’t cheap, and you need to feel good about your new hair awaiting you!

*The hair Sherri uses has been sought after by many stylists but she won’t divulge her secret to anyone. “I’ve spent many years searching for the best quality hair, and now that I have found it, I’m not letting it go! Stylists contact me all the time curious about where I purchase my hair from, but unfortunately I have to keep it to myself!”

Part Two of our A-List Abs program devised by celebrity trainer Ashley Conrad

workout

ADJUST YOUR ATTITUDE – GET YOUR BODY TO ITS OPTIMAL LEVEL, NOT A NUMBER ON THE SCALE Conrad believes it is important to gain some healthy perspective when trying to achieve the body of your dreams. “Our standard for what is sexy and in shape has shifted drastically. The body fat percentage it takes to get that [celebrity] stomach is very low and outside the realm of where your body naturally is comfortable as a woman.” So what it the optimal range? “21%-24% is a great [body fat] range for any woman. To look good on camera, [my clients] are between 17%-19%. It is lower – but my non-celebrity clientele often reach this range because their bodies are running at optimal level and not having to strain to have that fat come off.” The key is working with your body, not against it. “We tend to not listen to our bodies. If your body is telling you to rest, you need to rest.” But Conrad firmly believes in active rest. “You need to keep the blood flowing and draw nutrients into the muscles. I encourage everyone, even on ‘off’ days, to get outside and just walk for 20 minutes. Breathe. Reflect. It’s not just about exercise, it’s a lifestyle.”

FOOD – EAT CLEAN AND CONSCIOUSLY If you’ve been overloading your system with processed junk for far too long, kick-start a healthier lifestyle with a detox to ‘re-set’ your system. Conrad designed her own product, DETOX ROCKS, to specifically rinse the body clean of dirty toxins that cause cellulite & fatigue. The added bonus? “When you’re removing the trash from your body, its amazing for your skin,” says Conrad. The next step is getting organized about what you’re putting into your body – and when. “You must be eating 5 times a day,” advises Conrad, “and never overeating at any particular time by sticking to correct portion sizes.” The simplest way to do this is to divide your plate: ¼ protein (a piece of chicken or fish the size of your palm), ¼ grains (1 cup cooked brown rice the size of your fist), and ½ your plate should be mixed grilled peppers and broccoli. Try to avoid red meat. “[It] is very difficult to digest so it creates a lot of bloating.” If you suffer from regular bloating, Conrad suggests swapping out one of your meals for a nutrient dense shake. “It allows your digestion to rest and reduces the size of your stomach – but you still get all of the nutrients you need so you’re not hungry.”

BE SMART ABOUT THAT ‘HEALTHY’ SHAKE YOU’RE BLENDING UP “You think you’re making yourself a ‘healthy’ smoothie but 800 calories later, the blender is full of fruit to cover up the nasty taste [of the protein powder] and you’re bloated after drinking it.” Ashley’s celeb clients love her NAKED POWDER, an all-natural protein powder, packed with slimming organic juices & energizing vitamins as a meal replacement to banish the bloat. (NAKED POWDER, $40; DETOX ROCKS, $35: AVAILABLE FROM CLUTCHBODYSHOP.COM)

The Glamour Girl’s Guide….. To Making It In Hollywood

how to make it in hollywood

So you think you have the look? You have what it takes to be scene-stealing starlet? Ready to buy that plane ticket and hightail it to L.A? Not so fast. Like every roadmap to success, you need a game plan. So we asked movie producer Martin Blencowe, the man behind big screen flicks starring A-list talent from Bruce Willis to The Rock, for his insider expertise. In our Glamour Girl’s guide, we share tips on how to be smart and savvy, stand out in a crowd, and discover why it’s called showbusiness.

What advice would you give girls looking to move out to L.A to make it big in modelling or acting?

Having a good attitude is so important. I don’t care how beautiful you are, if your attitude stinks I won’t want to work with you – or recommend you in future for other opportunities. This business is very interconnected and people talk. What goes around, comes around. My other tip? Have a backup plan. If you’re moving out to Hollywood and giving it all you got because this is your dream, good for you. However, be smart about it. Set yourself goals, and be smart about making money and establishing a career for yourself in the event that being an actress just wasn’t meant to be. Plan ahead to get ahead.

Is being an actress in L.A as glamorous as it sounds?

I think the fantasy is always greater than the actual reality. It’s not all great paying jobs, photo shoots and red carpets. In this business, you’re going to face a lot of criticism and rejection, tough competition, and you need a strong work ethic and a great deal of determination to get ahead. If you become a working actress, then there are definitely ‘perks’ to the job, but it’s a lot of behind-the-scenes work to get to that position.

martin blencowe moviesAny practical prep work we should be doing?

Whether it’s acting classes or a dialect coach to work on your American accent, it doesn’t hurt to get some professional guidance if you can afford it. And take care of your body and your appearance. You always want to be ready for whatever opportunity comes up. You only get one chance to make an impression in front of a producer or casting director so you want to make sure you’re prepared and on point for any potential role.

Your new TV show, RESCUE 3, is from the creators of the iconic Baywatch. What has the casting process been like? Can we expect the same kind of bombshell female stars?

It’s a really exciting project and it will feature similar elements of action, beautiful beaches and yes, beautiful women. We have a few female leads cast so far, but we are still on the hunt for someone with that ‘wow’ factor. To this day, Pamela Anderson is still synonymous with that red bathing suit so I’d like to see lightening strike twice with Rescue 3 and create a new star. We will be holding a final casting soon and I will keep Glamour Edition posted closer to the date. G

G Girls | Anna De Nicola

Swiss-born model and actress Anna De Nicola was destined to be in the spotlight. It was practically written in her DNA. The daughter of a jet-setting top model, Anna made her grand debut as the spokesmodel for glam European swimwear label, TA-BOU. She has since starred in commercials, danced in a David Guetta video, graced the runway for luxe French corsetière, Titelle Couture, and has made a successful transition into the realm of acting. Now based in L.A, Anna can be seen in the feature films, “A Fate Tale”, “Noobz” and “Rouse” with many more in the works.

Anna De Nicola

Is being a professional model as glamorous as it sounds? What are the best ‘perks’ and not-so-fun parts about the business?

It can truly be one of the best experiences you’ll ever have. Not only do you get to fly to the best holiday destinations across the world, but you also get to know different cultures. Modeling itself never looks as easy as the resulting pictures itself; sometimes you’re shooting in such a hot climate that your feet are blistering, your make-up melts, you’re sweating all over from the heat, but our job is to make it look effortless.

You have been the face of the international swimwear company, TA-BOU – what was it like seeing yourself on posters and billboards?

I remember seeing myself the first time. I was walking on the street and as soon as I saw it I froze, it made me laugh so much because I worked so hard to get there and then finally I could enjoy it. It is always a great honor to be the face of a brand. As to seeing myself plastered around the city, it can make you feel a little awkward the first couple of times, you barely believe it’s you, but you have to get used to it.

Your Mom was a top model. What advice did she give you about the business?

My mom taught me to be professional, show respect, know what I want, sleep well, be on time and enjoy every minute of every job, but most importantly to always be myself.

How did you prepare to make the transition from modelling to acting?

After years of modelling, I knew it was time for a change and since I was 4 years old, I knew I wanted to become a storyteller. When I model, I imagine a story behind every picture we capture. Now I was ready for these stories to be heard, so I packed up all my things and moved to Los Angeles. I’ve frequented a couple of different schools to be able to get the most out of it, and started auditioning the 3rd week I was in town. There’s just so many things a teacher can teach you, until you have to get up and live the lessons yourself. Most of the things I’ve learned have come from the mistakes I made on set.

You speak several languages, including Italian, Spanish, French and German. Is there a particular language you enjoy performing in more?

I enjoy speaking different languages; I believe every single one has it’s perks. The first language I was ever taught was Italian, so of course it’s the closest to home but whenever I get the opportunity to perform in another language, I enjoy it just as much.

You worked on the silent film, Rouse. How did you find the challenge of a non-speaking role?

Surprisingly enough, I thought it was easier than many scripted roles I’ve had. More often than none, you’ll get a character whose way of speaking is far from your own, which makes it very difficult to connect to, especially in period pieces, where the language still wasn’t as defined as it is today. Of course shooting a silent film also brought difficulties with it, all you have is your range of emotions and you have to express a message with every look, every movement so clearly that the audience understands what you’re trying to say.

On your first audition, you booked the role of “Laura” in the romantic-dramatic feature film, “A Fate Tale,” which screened to sold-out audiences. What was it like being received to such acclaim starting out?

It was great! I had no idea what to expect, so from the first call sheet to the premiere invitation it has been such an incredible adventure! When I turned up for the screening, several months after the film was shot, I was overwhelmed in seeing this big theater completely packed. It sure makes your heart beat fast.

What’s up next for Anna De Nicola?

Enjoy everyday I’m given, keep bringing happiness to my family and loved ones, and strive everyday to achieve greater things.

The Ultimate Cellulite Busting Regime: Say Hello To Tighter, Firmer & Smoother Skin

butt

It’s a beauty concern that plagues 90 per cent of women’s lives – no matter your size or shape. Essentially, cellulite is a disorder of fat cells caused by poor lymphatic drainage & poor circulation, worsened by inflammatory responses. Poor drainage means that fat cells become congested and surrounded by toxins. Then they store more and more fat. More fat means less circulation, so tissue becomes deprived of nutrients and in turn creates thick fibres around the fat cells to stop them from growing. These thick fibres pull the tissue beneath the skin – leading to the lumpy appearance that cellulite is known for.  While there is no ‘cure’, that doesn’t mean there aren’t steps you can take to visibly reduce the appearance of dimpled skin, or prevent it from getting worse. Read our simple tips that attack cellulite from 3 angles by improving circulation & lymphatic drainage, decreasing the size of fat cells, and calming inflammation. These steps can easily be incorporated into your beauty regime – and will have you saying hello to tighter, firmer, and smoother skin in time for bikini season.

Make it a habit to walk or cycle for 30-60 minutes every day to stimulate lymphatic drainage and help burn stubborn fat cells.

3. STRETCH

After working out, take the time to stretch to return muscles to original length, and reduce water retention. Exercise classes like pilates and yoga improve cellulite by allowing lymph (fluid containing white blood cells) flow to move easier through fatty areas and flush toxins.

4. TAKE A BATH

Trainer James Duigan, whose clientele includes supermodels Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Elle Macpherson, says that Rosie swears by taking baths with added Epsom salts before a big swimwear shoot. Add one to two cups of Epsom salts (available at drugstores) to your bath to draw out toxins and help speed up weight loss. Try Dr. Teal’s Sleep Epsom Salt Lavender Soaking Solution, $5.99

5. SKIP THE SUGAR!

While you’ve all heard that sugar is bad for your waistline, you may not know exactly why: the hormone insulin is responsible for how your body makes and stores fat. It also provokes inflammation (which also is the biggest cause of aging!) The more sugar we eat – whether it’s fruit, pasta, bread, rice or potatoes – our cells become more resistant to insulin, so the body makes more. High insulin means more fat is stored, in this case on our thighs and butt, and more inflammation takes place so that fat cells become even harder to destroy. It’s a vicious cycle. Try Mulberry Leaf Extract, which helps slow the entry of sugar into the blood so insulin levels do not spike: New Nordic Mulberry Zuccarin, $25.99.

6. FIGHT INFLAMMATION

Try to pack as many anti-oxidants into your diet to counteract the negative impact that inflammatory responses have on the body: try brightly-colored fruits and vegetables, green tea and spices like cinnamon and turmeric. Try: Natrol The Ultimate Anti-Oxidant Formula, Capsules, $11.25.

7. HYDRATE

While it may seem counterintuitive to load up on water when you’re fighting fluid retention, hydrating your body with 2 litres of still, cool water every day will help flush out unwanted toxins.

8. GET YOUR CAFFEINE KICK

A jolt of caffeine isn’t just for your energy levels – studies show that it encourages fat cells to unload their contents. Try celeb fave NIP+FAB Cellulite Fix, $17.95, which uses a caffeine and Indian forskolin enriched complex to activate fat breakdown, promote the removal of toxins and improve firmness of skin.

9. PROFESSIONAL TREATMENTS

Want more results? Consider getting zapped with some radiofrequency, rated as the most effective treatment for cellulite. The waves heat up the tissue, causing the fat cells to use energy to cool down. This stimulates the skin to tighten up and regain its elasticity. SmoothShapes, a new treatment that liquefies fat through light and laser energy and then forces it to be expelled through the lymph system, has also been gaining a lot of buzz for its results.

10. FAKE IT TILL YOU MAKE IT!

Even supermodels have a little help. In 2009, VS Angel Selita Ebanks revealed it takes an hour, maybe longer, to apply body makeup to the girls before a show: “It’s all about creating the illusion of this amazing body. People don’t realize that there are about 20 layers of makeup on my butt alone.”

Celebrity trainer Gunnar Peterson shares his hot body training & diet tips

gunnar peterson sofia verga

He’s the man behind some of Hollywood’s hottest bodies and the trainer that celebs like Kim Kardashian, Sofia Vergara and Jennifer Lopez turn to for his no nonsense, take-it-to-the-max positive attitude and curve sculpting skills. We asked the Big G for some of his golden rules to getting that strong & sexy L.A body.

How would you describe your diet and workout philosophy as a trainer? Shoot for 100% and you’ll end up at 80-85% and you’ll be great. Shoot for 80-85% and you’ll end up at 65-70% and you’ll be disappointed – regularly.

They say you are what you eat. In the food vs exercise ratio, what percentage does a clean diet contribute to a lean body? The closer you are to your perfect body the more nutrition plays a part. When you are miles away it’s not imperative to be so focused on details. Build a framework then fill in the details as it/you take shape.

What would be a perfect example of a day’s clean eating sample menu? Stick to foods as close to their natural state as possible. Light proteins, light complex carbs and fruit that is high in antioxidants (ex. Blueberries) in the morning; clean carbs, veggies and light protein midday; and veggies and protein in the evening.

sample menuIs it true consuming dairy makes a women’s body look soft? What should you avoid to look less bloated make & muscle tone more prominent? Most people are lactose intolerant, it’s a question of degrees. What animals drink milk after their formative years… No, not cats, unless you put it out for them. Duh.

How many times a week do your celebrity female clients train a week? How is that broken down between cardio and resistance training? Between 2-5 depending on schedules and other athletic pursuits: pilates/ yoga/ Spinning/ running/ martial arts/ tennis. It’s always a mix. Organized chaos.

“Refined sugar is white death! It’s so hard on the body.

It spikes insulin levels and encourages fat storage!”

If you’re serious about dropping some lbs, what are your golden rules for keeping calories in check? Make breakfast bigger than lunch, and lunch bigger than dinner. Avoid complex carbs after dinner.

If you’re prepping a female client for a big red carpet event, how do you step up workouts & how far in advance? Are you an advocate for “two-a-days”? I lobby for more sleep if they can get it so the body can recover. As for the rest, we operate on the ‘if you stay ready you never have to get ready’ principle…

Why is it so important to eat a low sugar diet? If you’re going to have a cheat meal, which is the lesser of two evils: fat or sugar? Refined sugar is white death! It’s so hard on the body. It spikes insulin levels and encourages fat storage! Naturally occurring fats are far less evil. And great for your hair…so I’m told.

Every woman’s natural body type is different. What do you recommend your more curvaceous clients do in comparison to how you would sculpt a more supermodel-esque slender, athletic build? Train the weakness(es) with as much vigor as you train your strengths. Shoot for balance. Never try to hide or mask, own it to your core. Much of the beauty is in how you rock it.

Ok, we have 1 hour in the gym. What is the most effective fat-burning, full body workout we can do by ourselves? A mix of multi-joint strength movements (push-ups, squats, lunges, rows) coupled with high intensity bouts of cardio. Leave it all on the gym floor. DO NOT hold back.
